Natural Emotions

The year 2020 has been nothing short of a global emotional roller coaster. Surprise, fear, hope, anger, love, sadness, and compassion have all intertwined with pressing issues such as global warming, poverty, pollution, animal cruelty, pandemics, and political turmoil. While these concerns are crucial, they can become overwhelming and toxic if we neglect the positive aspects of our lives.

In her new work, Diana channels a spectrum of emotions through depictions of nature, primarily underwater scenes. She posits that nature plays a vital role in fostering and nourishing our positive emotions, helping us embrace the full emotional spectrum.

Nature possesses a unique ability to recharge our energies while simultaneously reflecting and confronting our feelings. Our brains map emotions to our experiences, like the perceived “smile” of a dolphin.

In this new series of paintings, Diana not only admires the beauty of nature but also projects human emotions onto them, stimulating introspection in the viewer.

Mutual Affection, 91x122cm $3,400

This was the center piece of the "Natural Emotions" Series. Mutual affection and respect are the center of love and friendship. Our relationships invigorate and enrich our lives, enable us to grow as a person and to experience what it means to be human. Once there is a foundation, this tender, delicate feeling will grow into something strong and endurable.

Inspiration:

In the heart of Dominica’s hidden depths, where the ocean’s breath whispers secrets, I descended into the abyss. The crater yawned wide, a dark maw, its edges adorned with corals, their colors vibrant against the blue-black canvas. And there, amidst the swaying fronds, I glimpsed them - the seahorses - tiny sentinels of this fluid cathedral. Camouflaged against the eye, they clung to the coral, steadfast, their tails wrapped around ancient branches, defying the currents that threatened to sweep them away. The blue, the deep, hypnotizing blue, wrapped around me like a lover’s arms, a siren’s call to explore the mysteries below. In that underwater crater, I found solace, wonder, and a connection - a reminder that we are all part of this vast, mysterious dance.

Standing by the sea, 91cm x 122cm, $2,900

Inspired by a warm night in Columbia at the sea. The full moon cast its radiant glow, creating a mirror-like reflection on the inky waters, while the street lights illuminated the tree in a soft, gentle light. A father and his young daughter found solace on an overturned rowing boat, basking in the warmth of the evening breeze that whispered tales of the sea.

Nature’s melody, often unnoticed, ranges from jubilant to serene, potent to melancholic. Its silent lyrics are masked by the eternal symphony of flora, fauna, and elements. This exhibition combines two typically isolated subjects: pristine nature, offering peace and liberation, and environmental degradation, symbolizing desolation and disrespect. Despite their opposition, both are part of our shared world.

Pieces of this exhibition were attributed musical attributes that were expressed through carefully selected imagery and colour composition.
